History of the Star Group

Star Group newspapers is located at

The Burleson Star was begun as a free weekly newspaper in 1965 by AlWhite. Shortly thereafter, White was joined by Wayne Hutson, who soon became sole owner of the Star while White turned his attention to the more promising Johnson County News in Cleburne. At one point, the Star printed an appeal to advertisers that it would have to cease operations if more ad support were not forthcoming from the city.

Hutson and his wife Susan at first operated the newspaper alone, then gradually began to add staff members. In January, 1972, James Moody joined the organization and soon became the newspaper's managing editor. In 1981,Hutson died of a heart attack and for several years his brother, Chuck, served as the publisher. In 1984, Moody became both editor and publisher and, a few years later, he and Susan Hutson established a newspaper in Crowley under a new partnership venture, Star Publications.

The Joshua newspaper was purchased a few years later and, subsequently, newspapers were established in Keene and Alvarado. In 1998, expansion headed in a new direction with the introduction of Star Marketing, an advertising specialty company. On June 30, 1999, Benbrook was added to the lineup of award-winning newspapers, bringing the number of paid circulation newspapers to six at that time. The Star Group rang in the 21st Century with yet another newspaper, the South Tarrant Star, which serves Everman, Forest Hill, and Kennedale.

All these ventures are under the umbrella of The Star Group. Star Group newspapers are community oriented and are state and regional award winners.
